Brian Dillon’s Affinities: On Art and Fascination (New York Review Books) and Konstantin Paustovsky’s The Story of a Life (NYRB Classics), both of which were released this past spring, have landed on The Washington Post’s roundup of “50 notable works of nonfiction” published in 2023.

Upcoming Film Adaptation of ‘Butcher’s Crossing’

On October 20, a new film adaptation of John Williams’s novel Butcher’s Crossing, published by NYRB Classics in 2007, will be released in select movie theaters across the U.S. Directed by Gabe Polsky, the film stars Nicolas Cage as the frontiersman Miller and Fred Hechinger as Will Andrews, the young man who drops out of Harvard to discover himself in the wilderness, eventually joining Miller’s pack of buffalo hunters.

‘Summer Cooking’ Featured in Column and Podcast

Valerie Stivers, the author behind The Paris Review's popular “Eat Your Words” column, recently cooked from and wrote about a deep cut from the NYRB Classics series: Summer Cooking by Elizabeth David. She was joined in this endeavor by Kassia Oset and Dylan Cuellar, hosts of the NYRB Classics–devoted podcast, Unburied Books. Unburied Books just released an episode featuring Stivers and Summer Cooking, too.

Christian Petzold ‘Anniversaries’ Giveaway

The filmmaker Christian Petzold, who adapted Anna Seghers’s Transit (NYRB Classics) to screen in 2018, is coming out with a new movie this year called Afire. The film is set in a beach town in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, birthplace of the author Uwe Johnson and a key location in his masterwork, Anniversaries, which was published by NYRB Classics in 2018. Afire includes a hilarious reference to Uwe Johnson during its runtime, and to celebrate, we’re partnering with Sideshow and Janus Films for a special giveaway.

Recent Reviews of Jünger and Bosco Books

Two major reviews of new and old NYRB Classics have been published in the last few weeks. The first, by Alex Ross in The New Yorker, discusses the life and work of Ernst Jünger, including the NYRB Classics editions of his novels On the Marble Cliffs (trans. Tess Lewis), which came out in January, and The Glass Bees (trans. Elizabeth Mayer & Louise Bogan). The second, by Marco Roth in The New York Times, covers two works by Henri Bosco, both translated by Joyce Zonana and published under the NYRB Classics imprint: his novel Malicroix and his novella The Child and the River, the latter of which is on shelves this month.

Françoise Gilot, the celebrated painter and author of three works of nonfiction, including the memoir Life with Picasso (NYRB Classics), about her ten-year relationship with Pablo Picasso, died last week at the age of 101.
